postheadericon Tying a Cravat For a Wedding Suit

Many is the Saturday morning that we have received panicky phone calls from palpitating grooms begging us to talk them through the elusive art of tying a cravat while the best man is screaming in the background for him to hurry up. It's even gone as extreme as having a groom stop off in the shop in his suit on the way to his wedding sheepishly asking for our help in tying the, "damned piece of equipment".

Some cravats come pre-tied but the more authentic ones have to be assembled and it can be a bit of a jigsaw puzzle.

The simple answer is that you follow the same procedure as you would with a tie. You start with one side a good bit shorter than the other. You then wrap the wide end around the narrow end until the beginnings of a knot forms. You then come under the loop with the wide end and bring the wide end over the knot. You then put the wide end through and the knot should have fully formed. By placing your fingers on the knot you can slide it up towards the shirt button by tugging gently at the shorter narrower piece of the cravat. When it is flush against the neck it is time to apply the finishing touches. Just like a windsor knot it can be nice to squeeze the knot on the slide up and this will have the effect of creating a little kink that makes the shape look even better.
